"When emperors enact bad laws on the side of falsehood, as against the truth, those who hold a right faith are approved, and, if they persevere, are crowned; but when the emperors enact good laws on behalf of the truth against falsehood, then those who rage against them are put in fear, and those who understand are reformed"
Augustine of Hippo, (354-430 A.D.)
Historic Conservatives can't take too seriously those who want to define us in contemporary terms only, we are nonplussed by such thinking. To so many around us, relevant history began in the 1960's, or if someone is really "deep", the late 1800's, when Darwinism first roamed the earth. Whichever period is considered the most important dawn of a “new era” becomes their “Genesis”, and whatever came before is necessarily dark and backward. We even have those who believe the greatest era of all was ushered in on Nov. 4, 2008!
The treasure we hold as Historic Conservatives is not locked into one, two, or even many points on a time line, it is a complex thread of devotion twisting and varied in shade, hue, and weight through the entire length of human history, as old as Cain and Able. A binding thread of devotion; to the Creator, revelation, truth, creation, elders, family, children, health, wholeness, order, justice, mercy, country, strength and courage, moral beauty, happiness, etc. We see beyond any human authority, with utmost loyalty, to the true King, before whom all authority and power are accountable. These devotions form the core of our worldview, the rock on which we live and give our lives. Rarely is the chasm of cultural division so distinct than when so-called Progressives flippantly dismiss these devotions and try to drain them from us, to remake us into hollow reflections of our true selves. We can, however, continue to contend confidently; it is impossible for them to change our very nature.
